Sustainability and Connections to the Environment

This week, the Ice Monsters showed their caring and compassionate sides when we began discussions about the impact humans have on the environment. We took part in Earth Hour and enjoyed an hour without using any electricity. We spent time in a dark CMC, searching for books (the manual way - no computers allowed) and reading. We then decided to reduce our energy usage for the whole day and kept off our classroom lights, using only natural light, and turning off the computers and screens when we were not using them. It really got us thinking about how many times we leave our lights and appliances on unnecessarily.

As part of our 'Connections to the Environment' unit, we discussed Global issues, like landfills, air pollution, deforestation and endangered animals and thought carefully about the negative effects humans have on the planet. We began thinking about how these global problems should be solved on both large and small scales. The Ice Monsters worked collaboratively to come up with lots of different solutions.

We visited the We also had the opportunity to learn more from other students. The grade 6 students have been working on United Nations “task forces” in which they select a world problem, investigate the causes and future predictions related to that problem, and design a product which will make a positive change to that problem. We were very interested to learn more about the different types of pollution in the world.

We're looking forward to putting our ideas into practice. Next week we will be beginning our 28 Day challenge where we each focus on one thing that will help care for the World. Keep an eye on our blogs for more information!
