Unit of Inquiry: How do we affect the environment?

Our 28 day challenge is well underway! Each day, the children are reflecting on how their actions from the previous day have helped our world. The children have been recording their actions in a class chart and in their journals. The students have impressed me so much in how emotionally intellectual they have become. They are discussing how they are saving water by taking shorter/bucket showers, turning of the tap while brushing their teeth or recycling left over water by watering plants, turning off unnecessary lights to save electricity, reducing paper usage by using both sides of the paper or bringing in hand towels to save trees. The Ice Monsters really are making a difference!

This week, we turned green by beginning a recycling system in our class. We now have "Recycle Rangers' who have the special job each day of helping to remind us all to recycle. At the end of the day, our recycle rangers sort and count our recycling, which we record together in a tally chart and then bring it to the appropriate recycling bins. We have become a lot more aware of what we are throwing away.

We became green fingered and planted our own veggies, not before doing lots of research into how to plant, take care of and harvest our plants. The Ice Monsters showed impressive researcher skills. We then continued to be conscious of our environment as instead of buying new plant pots, we crafted our own our of newspaper.
